Aiken, SC witnessed an exhilarating day of college basketball on January 6, 2025, as the USC Aiken Pacers’ men’s and women’s teams took on the Georgia College Bobcats in a double-header matchup. With the men clinching a hard-fought victory, and the women facing challenges, it was certainly a day to remember for fans and players alike!

Men’s Team Rallies Back for a Thrilling Win

The USC Aiken men’s basketball team had fans on the edge of their seats as they triumphed over Georgia College with a final score of 71-68. This victory bumped their overall record up to 8-4 and marked their first win in Peach Belt Conference (PBC) play, placing them at 1-1.

Star of the game was none other than Rhyjon Blackwell, who put on a sensational performance scoring an impressive 27 points, along with seven rebounds and three steals. His efforts proved crucial for the team as they faced a rocky start, trailing early in the game at 13-4. However, with inspiring plays from Jalen McCoy, who chipped in with 11 points and crucial rebounds, the Pacers began their comeback. A key three-pointer by Blackwell narrowed the gap, edging the score to 15-14.

Despite falling behind by as much as 30-19 in the first half, the Pacers showcased determination and grit. They ended the first half trailing by a manageable 32-24. As the second half kicked off, the dynamic team kicked into high gear, even snagging a 50-45 lead at one point!

In true suspenseful fashion, the final moments saw Blackwell honorably step up to the free-throw line after the score tied at 65-65. His composure under pressure secured the win for USC Aiken, sealing the deal with those critical free throws. Though the Pacers struggled with field goals — shooting just 28.4% from the floor (19 of 67) — their perseverance and grit made all the difference, especially with a huge 28 of 37 free throws made.

Women’s Team Falls Short But Shows Heart

60-46. The Pacers now sit at 3-9 overall, struggling to find rhythm in their PBC play with a record of 0-2.

Leading the charge for the women was Riley Simmons, who impressively racked up 11 points and made her mark with five blocks. Not too far behind were Paris Webster and Kendall Parker, each contributing nine points to the effort. With additional support from Serena Baker and Sami Bardonaro, who led in rebounds with seven, the team aimed high despite the challenges.

The women faced stiff competition early on, trailing at 9-2 before rallying to bring it to 9-7. A small spark ignited with a 5-0 run at the start of the second quarter but they went into halftime down at 29-22. In a surprising turn in the third quarter, Webster helped the Pacers gain a brief lead at 32-31, but unfortunately, the team struggled with shooting efficiency, landing only 31% of their shots (18 of 58). Nonetheless, they secured 44 rebounds total, with a notable 14 offensive boards showcasing their hustle.
