Augusta Hosts Karaoke Showcase for Adults with Disabilities

Augusta, Ga. – A heartwarming event unfolded in Augusta as the Community Chords program, part of the local Symphony, held its first-ever karaoke showcase for adults with disabilities. This program, which started in 2019, has a simple yet powerful mission: to help adults with disabilities express themselves through the joy of music.

A Collaboration for a Cause

For this special showcase, Community Chords teamed up with the Tri-Development Center of Aiken County. The event took place at the renowned Miller Theater, a venue that has hosted many significant performances over the years. “Each individual had different goals that we established together in our music therapy group, and today is the product,” shared Veronica Andreassen-Barker, the Director of Community Chords.

During the showcase, participants took the stage to perform songs they loved. The setlist boasted popular hits including Brick House by The Commodores, We Belong by Pat Benatar, Alone by Heart, and Celebration by Kool & The Gang, among various gospel tunes. This vibrant atmosphere brought together families, friends, and community members, all cheering for the talented performers.

Overcoming Challenges

The journey to this event was not without its challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic presented significant hurdles during the early years of the program. “When the pandemic came, they were devastated because it was like everybody separated,” remarked Deborah Samuels, a Community Support Specialist for the Tri-Development Center. However, the program adapted by transitioning to virtual meetings, allowing participants to connect and continue their musical journey even from afar.

Neuroscientists have shown that music and language activate different parts of the brain. This insight supports the effectiveness of programs like Community Chords in helping people communicate in ways that may not always be available to them in everyday life. “Music therapy services help make music accessible,” Andreassen-Barker added. “But, it also builds confidence and folks have fun and they forget about anxieties and worries and troubles, and we can really be a community together in music.”

A Memorable Experience

The highlight of the showcase was not just the performances, but the empowering experience it provided for the participants. Emcee Ariel Mundy expressed her enjoyment, stating, “I liked all the performances, they did good.” The setting of the iconic Miller Theater added extra excitement for the performers, providing them with an opportunity to shine on a legendary stage. “This is a really amazing stage. And for our individuals to get up on stage, it’s about more than just singing. It’s about facing fears and being recognized,” explained Heather Waddell, the Executive Director for TDC Aiken County.

For many, stepping onto the stage was a personal and emotional victory. Waddell continued, “Seeing them shine and have their moment, and having their name on screen, I mean how amazing is that?” The sense of community and encouragement filled the air, creating an atmosphere of joy that resonated across the audience.

Looking Ahead

The success of this karaoke showcase has inspired Community Chords to plan more events in the future. This provides a wonderful opportunity for individuals to share their stories and talents while connecting with others. The goal remains clear: to use the power of music as a pathway for communication and confidence among adults with disabilities.
