With a vote of 6-0, the board’s decision marks a significant milestone after nearly nine months of discussions. The Kisners aim to build their dream home while partially restoring the iconic stables, preserving 70% of the existing structures. Community reactions to the project remain mixed, with concerns about maintaining the stables’ historic character amidst modernization efforts.
In a recent meeting, the Aiken Design Review Board made a significant decision that many in the community have been talking about. On March 4, 2025, the board voted 6-0 to approve plans put forth by Kevin and Brittany Kisner for the historic Hitchcock/Bostwick Stables. This approval comes after a lengthy process that has stretched nearly nine months and included multiple discussions over the future of these beloved stables.
The stables in question are located at 525 Laurens St. S.W., resting on an 8.67-acre lot that has been in the Bostwick family for generations. Charlie and Tara Bostwick currently own the property, which has been a part of their family since 1947 when Charlie’s father, Pete Bostwick, acquired it from the historical Hitchcock family. This location holds deep roots in Aiken’s equestrian scene, as Pete was a renowned horse trainer and polo player.
The Kisners have their sights set on this stunning property with a vision that includes building their dream home alongside a comprehensive renovation of the iconic stables. While they plan to demolish certain sections of the stables, their intention is to partially restore the existing structures, preserving around 70%. This balance is intended to honor Aiken’s rich equestrian history while creating something new for future generations to enjoy.
The journey to this approval hasn’t exactly been smooth sailing. The Kisners first submitted their application to the Design Review Board on June 27, 2024. They encountered various delays including issues with city meeting agendas and the hindrance posed by Tropical Storm Helene. An engineer, Josh Stewart, also raised red flags about the structural integrity of the stables, noting that some load-bearing walls are resting on soil due to a problematic leveling course of bricks.
In an effort to honor the historical significance of the stables, the Kisners also plan to erect a marker dedicated to Peter Green, an important steeplechase trainer who worked with the Hitchcock family. This initiative represents a key part of their commitment to maintaining a connection to Aiken’s vibrant equestrian past while modernizing the facilities.
While the Design Review Board’s decision paves the way for the Kisners to move forward, there is still much work ahead. Future applications related to home construction and additional stables renovations will also require the board’s approval. As the story unfolds, it will be interesting to see how both the Kisners and the community continue to navigate this pivotal moment in Aiken’s equestrian history.
The discussion surrounding the Hitchcock/Bostwick Stables is far from over, and it’s clear that Aiken’s residents remain passionate about preserving their heritage while also embracing new opportunities. Stay tuned as we follow this evolving story!
