Nurturing Passion in North Augusta: Meet Henry Wynn

In the charming city of North Augusta, South Carolina, there’s a remarkable 77-year-old artist and musician who is beautifully blending his two great passions: art and music. Meet Henry Wynn, a left-handed guitarist and talented illustrator whose creative journey has spanned nearly a lifetime, captivating both locals and art enthusiasts alike.

A Musical Heartbeat

Henry finds joy performing with local bands like “The Henrys” and “Doug and The Henrys”. His music style brings warmth to the community, reminding everyone of the heartfelt connections formed through melodies and rhythms. With an impressive collection of guitars, particularly cherished Martin models that cradled his memories and experiences, Henry plays with skilled passion, always leaving listeners wanting more. Music, to him, serves as a perfect complement to his art, embodying the joy and essence of life.

From Early Days to Professional Milestones

Henry’s journey with art began in his childhood, thanks to his mother’s encouragement. She took him to the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art, igniting a spark for creativity that has never faded. During his early art lessons, while his peers sketched vases of flowers, Henry decided to draw a knight, showcasing his unique approach from the very start. After graduating from North Augusta High School, he honed his artistic skills at Augusta College, setting the course for a professional career that began in 1969.

As a professional ink illustrator, Henry wore many hats, creating simplified training manuals for soldiers at Fort Gordon and crafting illustrations for The Signal newspaper. His artistic scope expanded to include medical and archaeological illustration, further solidifying his reputation in the art community.

Retirement: A New Chapter

After retiring in 2006, Henry didn’t just hang up his paintbrush; instead, he rolled it in fresh ink and dove headfirst into freelance art projects. From house illustrations to bespoke portraits, Henry’s creations reflect his love for personalized art. One of his remarkable projects highlights 50 years of bluegrass music through a vibrant piece featuring Bill Monroe. This love for detail and personalization speaks volumes about who he is as both an artist and a musician.

Hand-Made vs. Digital

Amidst a digital world, Henry remains a staunch advocate for hand-made illustrations, insisting that the personal touch and effort involved in hand-drawn art cannot be substituted. His meticulous drawing process involves starting with preliminary sketches before diving into intricate details using black ink. His techniques, particularly his use of stipple pointillism, create astonishingly vivid images that have garnered international awards over his illustrious career.

Life on Two Fronts

Currently, Henry is balancing his art projects while performing music with his son, expressing the deep joy that comes from sharing these passions. Beyond performing, he also teaches guitar to eager students in his art studio, merging music and creativity in a uniquely fulfilling way.

A Legacy of Expression

Whether through music or illustration, Henry Wynn embodies devotion to his craft and the power of self-expression. For him, art and music are intertwined languages of joy that resonate deeply with life itself. With every stroke of the brush or strum of the guitar, he continues to enrich the North Augusta community, inspiring both young and old to embrace their creative spirits. It’s clear that Henry’s legacy will carry on, echoing in tunes and illustrations for generations to come.
