City of Aiken Government

The City of Aiken, South Carolina is governed by a council-manager system. The city council consists of six members, all of whom are elected from single-member districts. The mayor is elected at-large. The city council is responsible for setting policy for the city and overseeing the city manager, who is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the city. The city council meets on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 7:00 PM in the City Council Chambers at the Aiken Municipal Building. The city manager is appointed by the city council and serves at their pleasure. The city manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the city, including overseeing the city’s departments and staff.
 
The city of Aiken is divided into six wards, each of which is represented by one member of the city council. The wards are as follows:
 
  • Ward 1: The northern part of the city, including the downtown area
