Aiken County Residents: Free Tax Help at Your Local Library!

Good news for folks in Aiken County! If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the thought of tax season, there’s a shining light at the end of the tax tunnel. The AARP Foundation is rolling out its free Tax-Aide program at the Aiken County Public Library, and it’s here to make tax time less daunting for everyone, especially for our beloved seniors and those who need a helping hand.

When and Where to Get Help

Mark your calendars! The tax assistance services are available from February 4 to April 15. You can get help from trained volunteers every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Appointments can be made during these times:

  • Tuesday and Wednesday: 12:30 PM to 4:30 PM
  • Thursday: 10:30 AM to 4:30 PM

Remember, this is a by-appointment-only service, meaning there’s no walk-in traffic, so get those appointments locked in!

Meet the Volunteer Dream Team

The program is being led by a dedicated group of five local volunteers: Debra Budd, Elayne McClaine, Kerry Lawson, Jack Bartlett, and Mary Bartlett. These friendly faces are more than just volunteers; they’re passionate members of the community, ready to ensure that your tax return process goes smoothly. They’re trained and IRS-certified, staying updated on all the latest tax code changes to provide you with the best assistance possible!

Who’s Eligible?

This program is especially designed for elderly taxpayers, low-income individuals, and anyone who might struggle to afford those pricey traditional tax services that can average around $300. The best part? It’s not income-specific, so anyone in need can come by for some friendly, knowledgeable help.

What to Bring

Before heading to your appointment, be sure to collect the following important documents:

  • Your Social Security card
  • Photo identification
  • Tax forms from the previous year
  • Bank information for direct deposit refunds

Having these documents ready will help make the process smoother and quicker, allowing you to leave with confidence.

The Process

During your appointment, you can expect a comprehensive review. Each client will be allotted an hour and 15 minutes for their session. Using a two-preparer system, your tax return will be checked for accuracy and to uncover any potential refunds you might be eligible for. It’s all about maximizing your benefits!

Giving Back to the Community

This program isn’t just about taxes; it’s about community spirit and giving back. For those who may be daunted by tax preparation, this initiative ensures that everyone can get the help they need at no cost. Free service for our community members is what it’s all about!
