In Aiken County, South Carolina, law enforcement found three explosive devices during a search warrant execution, resulting in the arrest of Assad Coston, who faces felony charges linked to explosives and narcotics. The discovery heightened community concerns, prompting officials to ensure public safety while the investigation continues. Residents are urged to remain vigilant in reporting suspicious activities following this alarming incident.

Three Explosive Devices Discovered in Aiken County, One Arrest Made

This week in Aiken County, South Carolina, quite a startling situation unfolded as law enforcement officials stumbled upon three potential explosive devices, sending a wave of concern throughout the community. It all began on February 11 when deputies from the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office were executing an unrelated search warrant at a residence on Westbrook Farms Trail.

Discovery of Destructive Devices

As they went about their duties, officers discovered a destructive device tucked away at the residence. This alarming find led to the immediate arrest of Assad Coston, aged 46, who now faces serious felony charges. In South Carolina, possession of a destructive device is not to be taken lightly; it’s a felony that could land someone in prison for anywhere between 2 to 15 years.

But that’s not all—Coston has also racked up charges relating to narcotics, adding more weight to his legal troubles. As of noon on February 13, no information about his bond has been released, and he remains in custody at the Aiken County Detention Center. Currently, no future court dates have been scheduled for Coston.

Suspicious Devices Found in North Augusta

North Augusta Department of Public Safety was alerted to another potential threat when a neighbor flagged down officers about something unusual at a vacant home on Sky View Drive. Responding swiftly, the officers discovered two suspicious devices on the property, which understandably raised concerns in the neighborhood.

Given the circumstances, the officers made the decision to call in the experts: the Richmond County Explosive Ordinance Disposal team. Safety protocols were put into place, which included blocking off nearby roads and advising residents in the area to shelter in place until the situation was under control. Thankfully, the bomb squad was able to render the devices safe, and after a thorough investigation, no additional suspicious items were found at the Sky View Drive residence. The obtained devices have been sent off for further testing, as safety remains a top priority.

Where Are These Places?

For context, Westbrook Farms Trail is located off Beaver Dam Road, northeast of Aiken, while Sky View Drive is situated between Old Edgefield Road and Knox Avenue in North Augusta. Both locations are now unfortunately tied to reports of explosives and drug-related issues, which has become an ongoing concern for residents in Aiken County.

Concerns About Crime in the Area

As the investigation into Coston’s activities unfolded, law enforcement reportedly uncovered a trove of troubling findings within his home. Among the items found were drugs, needles, plastic baggies, digital scales, and even a homemade pill press, in addition to the related explosive devices. This connection raises alarming questions about the ongoing struggle against both explosive and drug-related crimes in Aiken County.

The series of events highlights the importance of community awareness and vigilance. With the growing concerns surrounding such serious matters, residents are encouraged to stay informed and report any suspicious activities they may encounter. The recent discoveries serve as a stark reminder of the challenges law enforcement faces, and the commitment they have towards keeping the community safe.
