This initiative, in partnership with the Greater Augusta Arts Council, aims to enrich the artistic experience in downtown Augusta. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for spring 2025, celebrating these captivating art pieces that can also be purchased. From symbolic sculptures to avant-garde installations, the expansion promises to strengthen community pride and drive economic development in the area.
Exciting news is unfolding in Augusta as the City, in partnership with the Greater Augusta Arts Council, gears up for a vibrant addition to the stunning Augusta Sculpture Trail. This spring, art enthusiasts and locals alike can look forward to a total of 10 new sculptures being installed along this artistic route.
The Augusta Sculpture Trail is becoming a must-visit destination in downtown Augusta, guiding visitors along a scenic pathway that leads to the picturesque Riverwalk and the charming 5th Street Pedestrian Bridge. With the new installments, the trail is truly becoming an artistic haven for those who appreciate creativity and community spirit.
To commemorate this exciting expansion, a ribbon-cutting ceremony is being planned for spring 2025, although the specific time and date remain a delightful mystery for now. For the following two years, residents and visitors will have the pleasure of enjoying these captivating pieces of art on public display, and interestingly, they will also be available for purchase—so there’s a chance to take a piece of Augusta home!
Each sculpture tells its own story and adds character to the trail. One remarkable piece, titled “What a Wonderful World,” created by Leonard Ursachi, features the Earth designed in the shape of an egg, representing our home and its delicate nature. Made of branches, stainless steel, and pigmented cement, this artwork can be found gracefully positioned at the Riverwalk.
Another noteworthy installation is Jen Garrett’s “Invasive,” showcasing a pair of stunning steel flowers. This moving work is a tribute to her mother and sister, both survivors of breast cancer, and stands proudly at the Augusta Common.
Moving on to something a bit more avant-garde, Harry McDaniel’s “Impractical Hardware” turns common fasteners into an abstract sculpture as a reflection of life’s intricate connections. Made from bronze, aluminum, and steel, this eye-catching piece is situated near the bustling intersection of 10th and Broad streets.
Larry Millard’s stunning “Stepped Tower” also makes an appearance, crafted from stainless steel to represent balance and growth as one ascends through life’s challenges, located once again at the Riverwalk.
Adding a touch of wildlife, “Sun Lion” by D’jean Jawrunner is inspired by the unique horned lizard and is composed of 11 bronze pieces. This piece is proudly displayed at Augusta Common, among other new installations.
David Sheldon contributes as well with “Orion,” interpreting the Orion constellation in painted steel, located near Eighth and Broad streets. Visitors will also stumble upon “Popsicles,” created by Craig Gray. This playful display features popsicle sculptures made of steel, stucco, and wood at the Augusta Common near Reynolds Street.
Art doesn’t stop there! Larry Schueckler is behind two breathtaking bronze sculptures, “Maestro” and “Forever Young.” Both pieces near Eighth and Broad streets celebrate the passion for the arts and the innocence of childhood.
Near 11th and Broad streets, Gus and Lina Ocamposilva present their bright welded aluminum sculpture “Unstoppable,” symbolizing the enduring spirit of humanity. Reflecting elegance, Gregory Johnson’s abstract mirrored stainless steel sculpture “Duet,” inspired by graceful swans, can also be admired at the Augusta Common.
This expansion of the Augusta Sculpture Trail is more than just a feast for the eyes. It aims to foster economic development in downtown Augusta and instill a sense of pride within the community. The blend of nature, commerce, and artistry makes this project a win for everyone involved.
As we await the unveiling of these fantastic new sculptures, there’s a buzz of excitement in the air—who wouldn’t want to stroll through a gallery rich in creativity right in the heart of Augusta? Keep your eyes peeled for the upcoming ceremony and get ready to experience all the artistic splendor this trail has to offer!
