Priced at $20, the calendar supports the museum’s educational programs and aims to foster community engagement with Augusta’s rich heritage.
Exciting news is buzzing around the town of Augusta as the Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History and Conference Center has just announced the launch of its very first black history calendar for the year 2025! This year, the calendar is aptly titled “Augusta Achievers – Celebrating Augusta’s Black History: Trailblazers, Gamechangers, Luminaries, Pacesetters.” It’s a fantastic way to honor those extraordinary individuals whose achievements have paved wonderful paths in the community.
The calendar is set to feature a unique story every month, shining a spotlight on local figures who have made tremendous contributions across various fields, including business, education, medicine, arts, and politics. Each story celebrates the legacy and accomplishments of these remarkable personalities, ensuring their contributions to Augusta’s rich history are never forgotten.
Among those featured is Dr. Mallory Millender, a respected journalist and professor at Paine College, recognized for her deep insights into historical contexts. Also included is Dr. Mac Bowman, a cardiologist at Piedmont Health Care, whose dedication has touched many lives. The roster also honors Dr. Ebony Brown, the trailblazing founder of Brown Girls Code, and the talented Russell Joel Brown, who has made his mark as a Broadway actor and the founder of Boys with a Future.
The calendar doesn’t stop there! It also highlights Velvet Perry, the Vice President and General Manager of Perry Broadcasting, alongside Hawthorne Welcher, Jr., the Director of Augusta Housing and Development. Additionally, the retired principal Marion Barnes of T.W. Joey High School has earned her place in the spotlight, along with Tyrone Butler, the founder and executive director of the Augusta Mini Theatre.
In a heartfelt nod to the past, the calendar also remembers some stalwarts who are no longer with us. Figures like Carrie Mays and Willie Mays III, both of whom were known for their entrepreneurial spirit and political engagement, along with B.L. Dent, the first Black city government elected official post-Reconstruction, are all featured. This calendar reflects on both the historical challenges and the triumphs of the Black community in Augusta through the stories of great leaders like R.A. “Papa” Dent, the first Black state government elected official post-Reconstruction, and Dr. Cheryl Evans Jones, a former president of Paine College.
