Sponsor Our ArticlesIn Tuscaloosa, Alabama, a thrilling game unfolded with the Alabama Crimson Tide barely surviving a rollercoaster encounter against the South Carolina Gamecocks, securing a heart-stopping 27-25 win on their home ground. The central players of the evening were Alabama’s Domani Jackson and South Carolina’s LaNorris Sellers, with Jackson intercepting a final pitch attempt by Sellers as time ran out, recovering from an earlier mishandled onside kick.
The battle hung in the balance until the final seconds of the game, continuing a series of razor-close encounters for No. 7 Alabama (5-1, 2-1). Proving Alabama’s mettle through unexpected adversity, head coach Kalen DeBoer said, “We’re kind of getting accustomed to those. But we always talk about finding a way to win. As many times as it looked like we weren’t, we did.”
Alabama’s victory was patchy and fraught with challenges, including a contested onside kick recovery and a desperate, game-winning interception, leading Alabama’s defensive lineman Tim Smith to admit, “It’s not the ‘W’ that we wanted… but a ‘W’ is a ‘W,’ man.” Alabama was previously coming off a narrow win against then-No. 2 Georgia (41-34) and a tough loss to Vanderbilt (40-35).
In a series of noteworthy plays, Alabama’s quarterback Jalen Milroe stepped up under pressure, even after stumbling a few times during the game. Despite his trials, including two interceptions and a glaring safety foul, Milroe’s heroics in orchestrating a 10-play drive that culminated in a 34-yard touchdown pass to receiver Germie Bernard was instrumental in containing the escalating threat from the Gamecocks.
Sellers, the quarterback from South Carolina (3-2, 1-3), hit his target Nyck Harbor for a clean 31-yard touchdown with just 43 seconds remaining. Their failing, however, was in their attempt to convert a critical two-pointer. Time wasn’t on their side as Sellers’ desperate throw toward the end zone in the dying seconds was intercepted by Jackson, sealing the match for Alabama.
The Gamecocks entered the fourth quarter with a lead and even had a chance to regain it after Alabama’s incredible turnaround. However, Alex Herrera‘s career-long 51-yard field goal attempt fell short. South Carolina coach Shane Beamer admitted, “Nobody was coming in here at halftime doing cartwheels because we were in a tight game with Alabama. We expected that, because we have a good football team. Life in this conference is really hard.”
Despite sometimes unsynchronized play and missed opportunities, both teams displayed immense grit and tenacity. Yet, it was Alabama that managed to come out on top, marking another thrilling entry in their ongoing journey through this season.
