Sponsor Our ArticlesToday’s weather in Aiken features cloudy skies with a high of 78°F, shifting to overcast conditions at night. Alongside the weather, we reminisce about Aiken’s rich restaurant history, including beloved spots like Eejay’s and Mr. Gatti’s, which are now closed. As we reflect on these cherished eateries, we acknowledge the challenges faced by local restaurants and celebrate the culinary memories that shaped our community.
Welcome to Aiken! Today, we’re looking at more than just the weather; we’re also diving into a nostalgic review of our beloved eateries that have graced this city!
Let’s start with the weather forecast for today. We’ll kick off the morning with cloudy skies. But don’t worry, as we move through the day, expect a transition to partly cloudy conditions by the afternoon. Make sure to keep an umbrella handy, though, as there’s a slight chance of a rain shower popping up. The high temperature is expected to hit a lovely 78°F, making it a perfect day to hit up a café or enjoy an outdoor meal. With winds gusting from the WSW at 10 to 15 mph, it will feel nice and breezy!
As the sun sets, those partly cloudy skies will gradually become overcast overnight, bringing a cooler low of 49°F. Tonight’s winds will shift to the NW at 5 to 10 mph, making it a cozy evening – ideal for snuggling up with a good book or perhaps a home-cooked meal!
As we reminisce about the dining options of yesteryear, it’s important to note that family-run restaurants in Aiken have been facing tough times recently. Many have closed due to the passing of owners or decisions made by families not to continue the legacy of their establishments. While it’s bittersweet, it’s essential to cherish the memories these places created for our community.
Other historical eateries dancing in our memories include places like Hardee’s, McDonald’s, Hornet’s Nest, and the classic SnoCap drive-in, all of which lined Richland Avenue and York Street. If you ventured down Whiskey Road, you were likely to find Mr. Gatti’s Pizza and Burger King, both hotspots around town.
However, change is the only constant in life. Recently, Zaxby’s vacated its location, and Mr. Gatti’s closed its doors in late 2022, with the property fetching a whopping $1.25 million in a sale. While it’s exciting to see new developments, we can’t help but feel nostalgic about those old favorites. Places like Arris’ Grill and Pizza Villa are still spoken of fondly. Ah, the memories!
While we reminisce about our culinary past, it’s essential to touch on an important topic – food safety! Health inspections have recently shed light on some hygiene complaints from various local restaurants in the Midlands area. Unfortunately, there were a few violations, including a presence of dead insects in food prep areas and improper food storage practices. Thankfully, most establishments took these findings seriously, leading to successful follow-up inspections that improved ratings from a ‘C’ to an impressive ‘A’.
Finally, amidst the shifting restaurant scene, Aiken’s community has shown resilience. During tough times, like the recovery from Hurricane Helene, local businesses stepped up, providing essential needs and keeping the spirit of Aiken alive.
So as we navigate through this cloudy day while reminiscing about our city’s vibrant dining history, let’s appreciate both the old favorites and the new spots blossoming in Aiken. Here’s to delicious food and wonderful memories!
