Sponsor Our ArticlesAiken, South Carolina, is mourning the loss of Folly Home Furnishings, which has now closed permanently after over a decade of service. Known for its blend of antique and modern decor, the store was a beloved destination for locals. As Aiken navigates this emotional closure, it also braces for Tropical Storm Debby and winter weather warnings, which complicate the community’s challenges. Residents reflect on the memories created at Folly while preparing for the storm ahead.
Aiken, South Carolina, is feeling a bit emptier these days as the beloved Folly Home Furnishings store has closed its doors permanently. Located at 116 Laurens St. S.W., right between the buzzing Aiken Antique Mall and the ERA Wilder Concierge real estate office, Folly was a delightful blend of the old and the new since Jane Hottensen first opened its doors back in 2010. From the moment you stepped inside, the store exuded charm with its selection of home furnishings and personal accessories like handbags, scarves, pillows, table linens, and exquisite light fixtures. There was always something special to find, whether it was a vintage table or a stylish new accent piece.
Hottensen described her vision for Folly as a perfect fusion of antiques and modern décor, wrapped in a classic style with a twist. It catered to those who loved the warm, inviting feel of traditional furnishings while also giving them a fresh flair. Sadly, the store’s phone number is no longer in service, marking the end of an era for many local shoppers who fondly remember their visits.
Now, as Aiken bids adieu to Folly, residents are also bracing for more tumultuous weather. Tropical Storm Debby is approaching, and officials are taking no chances as Aiken County prepares for what could be significant flooding. Emergency measures are being rolled out in anticipation of heavy rainfall over the next few days. Local emergency services are actively gathering information and assessing the potential impact of the storm for the safety of the community.
Residents, too, are doing their part by clearing drains and taking necessary precautions to safeguard their homes and families. Caution is the name of the game, as flood warnings have been issued, encouraging locals to avoid any flooded areas to prevent hazardous situations.
As if the storm wasn’t enough, South Carolina is also dealing with winter storm warnings across various counties, including Kershaw, Fairfield, Newberry, Saluda, and Edgefield. From 10 a.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday, affected areas can expect dangerous conditions due to freezing rain and sleet that could lead to significant ice accumulation. Aiken County is among those under a winter storm advisory, with forecasts predicting the coldest temperatures of the year, reaching highs around 36 degrees and lows dipping to 31 degrees.
The icy conditions are causing major concerns, such as treacherous driving, potential power outages, and possible tree damage. School districts in the Columbia area have already adapted their class schedules to keep students safe. The National Weather Service is urging everyone to be cautious as travel could become hazardous from noon Friday until Saturday morning.
Additionally, a dense fog advisory is currently in effect until 9 a.m. on February 12, 2025, which impacts visibility across southeast Georgia and southeast South Carolina. With visibility potentially reduced to a quarter mile or less, it’s a good reminder to drive slowly and carefully.
While Aiken is facing some tough weather ahead, the closure of Folly Home Furnishings adds an emotional layer to the challenges. It’s never easy to say goodbye to a place that held so many beautiful memories and shopping experiences for the locals. However, as we tackle the storms—both literal and metaphorical—together, the Aiken community’s resilience will shine through. Like Folly’s unique offerings, let’s embrace the blend of our past and future, navigating these changes with strength and camaraderie.
