Greetings, Aiken! The week ahead promises to be a lively mix of events and opportunities to connect with your neighbors while enjoying the gradual warming trend. So grab your jackets, as we dive into what’s happening in our charming city.
Let’s start with the weather forecast. Aiken is looking at partly cloudy skies with a high of around 59°F, so it’s a great week to step outside and feel the fresh air! Light and variable winds will be blowing in from the east-northeast at 5 to 10 mph. As night approaches, temperatures will dip down to a cool 39°F. Keep your eyes on the skies, as clouds will start to gather overnight, and there’s a chance of rain moving in on Friday! It’s a perfect time to keep those umbrellas handy.
Mark your calendars because there’s a lot of engagement happening this week! On Tuesday, February 18, you can join the Beech Island Historical Society Meeting at 7:30 p.m. at their history and visitor’s center. You won’t want to miss guest speaker Pete Peters, who will take us on a journey through Aiken’s aviation history. Connect with Jackie Bartley at 706-833-3651 for any details!
Also on Tuesday, the Book Club at Aiken County Public Library kicks off at 2:30 p.m. This month’s book is “The Unforgiving Minute; A Soldier’s Education” by Craig M. Mullaney. Make sure to register at the information desk on the second floor.
Later that same evening, book lovers, gather around for the Let’s Talk About Discussion Series, exploring Southern Novels on the Page and Screen. The focus will be on “The Grass Harp” by Truman Capote, with a movie showing starting at 5:30 p.m.. There’s another showing on Saturday, February 22, at 12:30 p.m., followed by an engaging discussion led by Dr. Andrew Geyer on February 25 at 6:30 p.m. Exciting stuff for those who love literature and cinema!
Aiken’s creative side shines on Tuesday, February 18, with the Mountain Dulcimers of Aiken meeting at 5 p.m. over at the Living Hope Fellowship Church. If jazz is more your style, swing by The Willcox on Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. for some catchy tunes by “4 Cats in the Doghouse.” It’s the perfect way to unwind and enjoy our community’s musical offerings!
Throughout the week, there are various support groups available for everyone. Attend the Awesome Aiken Al-Anon group meeting at First Christian Church, or the Nar-Anon Aiken For Comfort Family Group at St. John’s Methodist Church, both meeting on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Meanwhile, Celebrate Recovery is at Cedar Creek Church at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays, along with a Depression, Anxiety, and Bipolar Support Group which is online from 7-8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays.
This week also offers enriching experiences with lectures and workshops. Come listen to cultural anthropologist Zara Browne on February 20 discussing the Murphy Village Irish Travelers at Augusta University. And don’t miss the book signing event with Kenneth Rogers Jr. at The Emanuel-McClain Women and Children’s Health Center, also on February 20!
On February 19, the Senior Men’s Club will meet at Woodside Country Club while the Aiken Woman’s Heart Board presents the production “I Heart Nola” at the Etherredge Center, which runs from February 19-23. Not forgetting the Canvas Painting Workshop at the Smith-Hazel Recreation Center, offering a free experience for ages 20 and older!
Make sure to check out the NPHC of Aiken Men’s Health Fair on February 22 at Old Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church for some free health screenings. Another social gathering is taking place on February 21 with the pastoral anniversary celebration at St. John Baptist Church.
As Aiken continues its beautiful blend of history, creativity, and well-being, keep an eye on the historical lecture on February 23 discussing our city’s historic cemeteries. Plus, there’s a hint of a wintry mix late Friday into Saturday, so stay tuned for more weather updates!
So there you have it! Get out there and soak up the community spirit, make some new friends, and enjoy our wonderful events this week. It promises to be an exciting time in Aiken!
