Sponsor Our ArticlesThe Aiken County Board of Education has approved a $100 million facility improvement plan to enhance local schools. This initiative will transform the educational environment over the next six years, addressing urgent needs in infrastructure and resources. Funded through general obligation bonds and a newly approved sales tax levy, this plan aims to provide better learning conditions for students, including significant upgrades to existing facilities. The project emphasizes community support and strategic planning to ensure a bright future for education in Aiken County.
Exciting news for the families and students of Aiken County! On February 11, 2025, the Aiken County Board of Education gave the green light to a massive $100 million facility improvement plan, promising a brighter future for our local schools. This plan is set to transform the educational landscape by addressing critical needs in our facilities through the year 2030.
The Five-Year Facility Improvement Plan is all about making our schools better places for students to learn and grow. The plan will unfold over six years, starting with the fiscal year 2024-2025. It’s a proactive approach, prioritizing projects based on how urgently they need attention. The Chief Officer of Operations & Student Services has provided a detailed overview of what to expect in the coming years.
This ambitious project is funded through the issuance of general obligation bonds, which are issued annually. The law caps the district’s outstanding debt at 8% of the total assessed property values, meaning about $20 million can be borrowed each year. This keeps things in check while ensuring our schools get the improvements they so greatly need!
With the first phase in motion, we have an exciting lineup of projects already planned for this fiscal year. For starters, there’s a shiny new Wagener-Salley High School coming in at a whopping $14.5 million. But that’s not all! Here’s a quick peek at what’s in store:
And don’t forget about next year! The budget for 2025-2026 includes a hefty $10.5 million for athletic facilities at the new high school, plus vital upgrades for air conditioning and roofing across several schools.
Looking ahead, the excitement continues! Plans for 2026-2027 are set to include an additional $9.5 million for ongoing projects at the athletic complex, and in subsequent years, we can anticipate even more upgrades, like HVAC improvements, roofing maintenance, and new flooring options.
But how will it all be funded in the long run? Good news, everyone! Voters in Aiken County stepped up by approving a 1% sales tax levy in November 2024. This tax is expected to generate $398 million over ten years—90% of which will go towards these crucial capital improvement projects, while 10% will assist with property tax relief. Additionally, voters allowed the issuance of bonds not exceeding $285 million to jumpstart the projects.
With all these improvements on the horizon, it’s clear that Aiken County is investing in its students’ futures. The school district is committed to delivering quality educational environments, giving students the facilities they deserve to thrive. As these projects roll out over the next few years, everyone in the community will hopefully see and feel the changes. Exciting times are ahead!
