Aiken County Sees Big Drug and Firearms Bust

In the quiet community of Aiken County, law enforcement recently made headlines with a significant operation that led to the arrest of three individuals. The scene unfolded at a home located on Westbrook Trail Road, where authorities conducted a thorough search that revealed a slew of alarming findings.

During the search, officers seized a total of 14 firearms, including three that were reported stolen. To make matters even more concerning, an improvised explosive device was discovered along with illegal drugs, specifically methamphetamine and cocaine. The situation has sent shockwaves through the community, raising questions about the safety and security of the area.

The Arrests

Among those arrested was Assad Coston, 46, who is facing multiple charges. His list of accusations includes possession of methamphetamine, operating what is described as a stash house, and possession of a destructive device. Coston’s arrest highlights serious concerns regarding controlled substances and illegal weaponry.

Also charged is Nichole Lee Coomes, 37, who faces allegations of methamphetamine possession. Meanwhile, Melissa Sheppard has been charged with possession of cocaine. As of now, all three suspects are being held in the Aiken County Detention Center, and the investigation is ongoing, suggesting that more charges could follow in this startling case.

A Weekend of Violence

In a separate yet equally disturbing set of events, four men were arrested in connection with the murder of Remedee Jennings-Leaphart, a 21-year-old tragically shot on January 23 in Monetta. This incident has brought to light the ongoing issues with gun violence in the region.

The suspects in this case include Latrez Nicholson, 20, Zayvion Abner, 20, Demarion Morris, 19, and Wondrecus Brunson, 23. Each is facing serious charges of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, revealing the gravity of their alleged actions.

The shooting took place in the 100 block of Pine Circle, where Jennings-Leaphart was transported to a medical clinic and later transferred to Lexington Medical Center but was unfortunately pronounced dead on arrival due to a gunshot wound. Known for being a talented high school quarterback who graduated in 2022 with multiple athletic records, Jennings-Leaphart was reportedly working for Shaw Industries and enjoyed music production in his free time, making his untimely death an even greater loss for the community.

A Standoff and More Arrests

Adding to the turbulent atmosphere in the county, another individual, Zayvian Patrick Butler, 20, was arrested following a standoff with law enforcement in Gloverville. He is charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime after allegedly shooting a woman at a residence on Lawana Drive around 11:30 p.m.

In this tense situation, witnesses reported that Butler was armed and behaving erratically, having even shot rounds within the home. Fortunately, after a period of crisis negotiations, he surrendered to the police. The victim, identified as Adrienne S. Richardson, 46, was found deceased from a gunshot wound to the face. It’s noteworthy that Butler was out on bond from a previous arrest at the time of this alarming incident, raising further concerns about community safety.

The authorities are continuing their investigations into each of these shocking cases, with the potential for more charges forthcoming. We’ve entered a challenging time where safety concerns need to be addressed promptly in Aiken County, as community members hope for a swift resolution to these unsettling events.
